What to Do When You Feel Far From God?

(let me speak honestly… because this is something many believers go through but rarely admit)
There are seasons where you feel so close to God.
You feel Him in your prayers.
You feel Him in worship.
You feel Him in every moment.
And then there are seasons where you don’t feel anything.
You pray… and it feels silent.
You worship… and you feel disconnected.
You try to read the Bible… and nothing hits your heart.
You wonder if something is wrong with you.
And the scariest thought comes:
“Why don’t I feel God anymore?”
I’ve been there too.
And if you are in this place right now and I want to remind you of something important;
Feeling far from God doesn’t mean God is far from you.
Sometimes we confuse emotions with presence.
But God’s presence isn’t based on how you feel but
it’s based on who He is.
1. Be honest with God
You don’t need fancy prayers.
You don’t need the “right words.”
Sometimes the most powerful prayer is:
“God, I don’t feel You right now… but I still need You.”
God doesn’t want a perfect performance.
He wants your real heart.
Honesty builds closeness, even when emotions don’t.
2. Remember: Silence doesn’t mean absence
We often think God is closest when we feel chills and butterflies.
But sometimes God is closest when He’s silent.
In the Bible, God was with Joseph in prison,
with Daniel in the lions’ den,
with Job in his pain -
even when they couldn’t feel Him.
God’s silence is not rejection but
it’s often preparation.
3. Go back to the basics
When your faith feels dry:
Read one verse, even if just one.
Pray one sentence.
Worship quietly without expectation.
Faith isn’t about how much you do.
It’s about who you’re turning to.
Sometimes returning to simple things
brings the deepest connection.
4. Don’t isolate yourself
When you feel distant from God,
the enemy wants you to withdraw and makes you believe:
“I’m the only one struggling.”
But you’re not.
Talk to:
a friend who prays
someone strong in faith
someone who knows God’s love
God often uses people to reach you
when your heart feels unreachable.
5. Notice the small ways God shows up
Closeness isn’t always dramatic.
Sometimes He shows up in:
a moment of unexpected peace
a song that speaks directly to you
someone who checks on you at the right time
a verse that feels like comfort
a sunrise that reminds you of hope
These are gentle whispers… not shouts.
Just because God is quiet
doesn’t mean He stopped loving you.
Personal Reflection: What I’m Learning
There were days I felt ashamed for not feeling “spiritual enough.”
I thought God was disappointed in me.
I thought maybe I wasn’t praying right.
I thought I was losing my faith.
But God began to show me something:
My feelings are temporary. His love is not.
Even when I felt far,
God was holding me closer than I knew.
He wasn’t expecting me to chase after Him perfectly,
He was simply waiting for me to rest in Him.
Sometimes the closest moments to God
are the ones where we feel nothing…
but still choose to believe.
Encouragement for You!
If you feel far from God today…
You are not broken.
You are not failing.
You are not alone.
You are not forgotten.
God has not moved away from you.
You are still loved.
You are still His.
You are still held.
You are still chosen.
This season won’t last forever.
Your heart will feel alive again.
Your spirit will hear Him again.
Until then…
Keep showing up.
Keep trusting quietly.
Keep holding on.
Because sometimes…
faith isn’t a feeling - it’s simply staying.
