How to Find Meaning in the Ordinary
Let me be Honest...
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like everyone else’s life looks more meaningful than mine.
People traveling.
People achieving big things.
People having “deep life moments.”
People posting aesthetic sunsets and life-changing captions.
Meanwhile I’m just…
waking up, getting ready, going to class, scrolling, eating, talking, sleeping.
Repeat.
And for the longest time, I used to think:
“Is this it? Is my life supposed to feel this normal?”
But recently, something shifted in me, and I’ve been learning this slowly - meaning is not found in the big moments; it’s hidden in the small ones we don’t often pay attention to.
The ordinary is not empty.
We just move too fast to notice the meaning inside it.
So here’s what I’ve been learning about finding meaning in the everyday, simple moments of life and I just wanna share it here.
1. Meaning often hides in routines we complain about.
I used to be irritated at routine - same classrooms, same meals, same schedule.
But now I’m realizing something:
-
There’s meaning in eating with people you love.
-
There’s meaning in laughing at the same silly jokes.
-
There’s meaning in waking up safe.
-
There’s meaning in having a day that doesn’t break you.
Sometimes “ordinary” is actually “blessed but unnoticed.”
2. Slow moments are not boring - they’re healing.
We live in a world where everything has to be exciting or aesthetic to count right?
But honestly...
I realized that some of my most meaningful moments happen when nothing is happening.
Like:
-
Sitting alone with my thoughts.
-
Drinking tea slowly.
-
Watching the sky change color.
-
Listening to someone talk about their day.
-
Walking without rushing.
Those small things actually help me feel human again.
Meaning isn’t loud. It’s soft like noticing even the smallest one.
3. The people around us bring meaning without us realizing it.
Just think about this:
The random conversation with a friend.
That one joke that made you laugh way too much.
Someone saving you a seat.
Someone remembering something small about you.
Someone checking on you.
These moments are tiny, but they stick with us.
We hold onto them without even realizing it.
That’s meaning.
That’s connection.
That’s God showing up through people.
4. Meaning comes when I stop rushing and start noticing.
Most days I walk fast.
Think fast.
Scroll fast.
Live fast.
And when life feels meaningless, it’s usually because I’m rushing past the things that do carry meaning.
Now I’m trying to notice small things like:
-
The quiet moments.
-
The warmth of sunlight.
-
The smell of rain.
-
The comfort of my bed.
-
The sound of laughter.
-
Even the peace in breathing.
Suddenly… the day doesn’t feel so normal anymore.
5. God is found more in the ordinary than the extraordinary.
This one hit me hard.
I always thought I would find God in big spiritual experiences — worship sessions, retreats, emotional moments. Of course, we can, but it's in those small ordinary moments you'll feel so fulfilled with God's presence. Let me explain.
Lately I’m finding Him in:
-
my morning busyness
-
conversations
-
rest
-
silence
-
smiles
-
small blessings
-
unexpected calmness
-
tiny answered prayers
God is not waiting for us in special moments.
He walks with us in the most ordinary parts of our day.
We just forget to look and realize it sooner.
Personal Reflection: What I’m Learning
See, I used to feel like my life wasn’t meaningful enough.
I wanted a big calling, big purpose, big moments.
But now I’m learning that meaning is not something you find.
It’s something you notice.
Meaning is:
-
being present
-
being grateful
-
being aware
-
being gentle with yourself
-
letting yourself enjoy small things
Meaning is in the way you see things - not just in what happens to you.
And honestly?
Life feels so much lighter and richer when you stop waiting for something big and start appreciating the small.
Encouragement for You; (from someone figuring it out too)
If you feel like your life is “too normal” or “nothing exciting happens,”
just know this:
"Sometimes God hides the biggest blessings in the simplest days."
Not every day will change your life.
But every day can teach you something, comfort you in some way, or quietly shape who you’re becoming.
Meaning isn’t always dramatic as you expect.
Sometimes it’s just:
-
peace
-
laughter
-
comfort
-
safety
-
little moments of joy
-
the feeling of being alive
And those ordinary things?
They’re the very things you’ll look back one day…
and realize they were never ordinary at all.
