Why Peace Is Better Than Comfort

Have you ever caught yourself saying,

"I just want this week to be over."

Or maybe...

"Once I finish college, life will be better."

"Once I get a job, I'll finally be happy."

"Once I lose weight, I'll feel confident."

"Once I get married, I won't feel lonely anymore."

"Once I have enough money, I'll stop worrying."

If we're honest, we've all lived with a "once..."

We're always waiting for the next thing, believing that's where peace is waiting for us.

But have you noticed something?

When one problem ends, another one begins.

You finish your exams...

Now you're stressed about your results.

You get the job you've been praying for...

Now you're worried about performing well.

You finally buy the phone you've always wanted...

A few weeks later, you're already looking at the next one.

You pray for a relationship...

Then you find yourself praying for fewer arguments.

It's almost like peace keeps moving further away.

I think that's because many of us confuse comfort with peace.

We think,

"If my life becomes comfortable, then I'll have peace."

But that's not how peace works.

Comfort Depends on What's Around You

Comfort says,

"If nothing goes wrong today, I'll be okay."

But what happens when...

Your plans fall apart?

Someone hurts you?

You lose an opportunity?

Your prayers aren't answered the way you hoped?

Suddenly, your comfort disappears.

Because comfort is built on circumstances.

And circumstances change all the time.

Peace Depends on Who Is With You

Peace isn't having a perfect life.

Peace is knowing you're not walking through life alone.

One of my favourite stories in the Bible is when Jesus and His disciples were on a boat.

A huge storm came.

The disciples were terrified.

Some of them were experienced fishermen, yet even they thought they were going to die.

Meanwhile...

Jesus was asleep.

I always found that fascinating.

How do you sleep during a storm?

Then I realised...

Jesus wasn't peaceful because there wasn't a storm.

He had peace because He knew who was in control.

How many times are we like the disciples?

The smallest delay makes us anxious.

One unexpected phone call ruins our whole day.

One rejection makes us question our worth.

One unanswered prayer makes us wonder if God is listening.

And yet Jesus gently asks the same question He asked His disciples:

"Why are you so afraid?" (Mark 4:40)

Not because He didn't care.

But because He wanted them to remember who was in the boat with them.

Maybe that's what we need to remember too.

The storm may still be there.

The uncertainty may still be there.

But so is Jesus.

The World's Version of Peace

The world says:

"Remove the problem."

Jesus says:

"Let Me walk through it with you."

The world says:

"You'll have peace when life becomes easier."

Jesus says:

"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives." (John 14:27)

That's the difference.

The world offers temporary comfort.

Jesus offers lasting peace.

A Lesson I'm Still Learning

Recently, I realised something in my own life.

I wasn't really asking God for peace.

I was asking Him for comfort.

I wanted Him to remove every difficult situation.

But instead, He reminded me that His presence is greater than my circumstances.

Sometimes God calms the storm.

Sometimes He calms us in the middle of it.

And honestly, I think the second miracle is even more beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Maybe today you're waiting for everything to fall into place before you allow yourself to feel at peace.

But what if peace isn't found after your problems disappear?

What if peace is found in knowing that no matter what happens next...

God is already there.

Because comfort comes and goes.

But the peace that comes from God's presence stays, even when life doesn't go according to plan.
