Why We Compare Our Lives to Others?
Have you ever opened Instagram for just a few minutes and suddenly felt bad about your own life?
Someone got a new job.
Someone got married.
Someone is travelling abroad.
Someone is scoring better grades.
Someone seems prettier, smarter, richer, or more successful.
And before you know it, you're asking yourself:
"Why isn't my life like that?"
I think we've all been there.
The funny thing about comparison is that it steals our joy without giving us anything in return.
A few minutes ago, we were happy with our lives. Then we saw someone else's life and suddenly what we have doesn't seem enough.
But here's what I've learned:
We are comparing our everyday life to someone else's highlight reel.
We see their success, but not their struggles.
We see their smiles, but not their tears.
We see the result, but not the journey.
Sometimes I catch myself wondering why God is blessing someone else in a way that I want.
Then I'm reminded that God isn't writing the same story for all of us.
Just because someone is ahead in one area doesn't mean you're behind.
We're simply on different paths.
The Bible says,
"Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else." — Galatians 6:4
God never asked us to compare.
He asked us to trust Him.
Maybe the life you want will come later.
Maybe God is preparing you first.
Maybe your journey is different because your purpose is different.
Instead of looking at what everyone else has, I've been learning to thank God for what He's already given me.
Comparison says, "Look at them."
Contentment says, "Look at how far God has brought you."
And honestly, contentment brings much more peace.
